All I've done is install a driver from the printer manufacturer. Keep in mind that this is still using the WSD Port. The time from when the data light came on to when the printer began printing dropped all the way down to just a hair over 3 seconds. Next I went to the manufacturer's website and downloaded their Universal PCL6 print driver and replaced the generic driver windows had used. With the printer warmed up the test page took a little over 9 seconds from the time the data light came on until the printer began to print. Windows chose this generic driver called "Ricoh Class Driver". I followed the wizard through and let Windows do the rest.

Windows 10 went out and found this Ricoh SP4310n printer in my office. By disabeling WSD windows can no longer find the printer and choose a driver for it on its own.įor example, I just clicked on Add Printer.

Its not so much the WSD itself as it is when Windows uses WSD to detect new printers on the network and automatically creates the printer on its own or if you do add printer and let windows automatically choose the driver it selects generic print drivers rather than the correct driver that is specific to the model printer. It is best to find the WSD settings on the device and disable them so you never run into this issue again.Įdited by 00Craig, 20 March 2018 - 08:56 AM.

Same will happen when you bring a new Windows 8 or 10 computer and hang it on the network. If the user then selects the printer from their list of available printers that has the bad driver you start the problem all over. You would then end up with two printers set up on that workstation for the same device.one that is correct and one that is not. Hope this helps.īy the way, if you do not disable the WSD settings on the printing device you will have a reoccurring problem down the road as Windows will continue to try to add the printer to those workstations even after you delete it. It only takes one workstation having this issue to create a log jam on an entire office network. Reading this thread I would be 99% sure this is the issue being experienced. Generally speaking the print driver that is correct for your printer will not just have the manufacturer in the name, it will also have the model number and a suffix like PCL, PCL5, PCL6, KX or PS after it. For example: "Ricoh Class Driver" or "HP Class Driver Plus". The dead giveaway that you have the GARBAGE generic Microsoft driver is if the driver name has the word "Class" in it. Check that the Driver is the correct for your printing device. In the box that opens up select the Advanced tab. Meanwhile everyone else trying to print is stuck waiting in line behind the offending print job.Īnother way to diagnose this: On the individual workstations.Go to control panel -> printers and right click on the printer.

A simple brochure PDF could take over 5 minutes per page. If you try to print anything more than a basic email the print job will take forever to print.

These generic print drivers are complete garbage. Its a generic print diver and not the RIGHT driver. Sounds great right!!!? Here is the problem.when Windows does this it automatically chooses a generic print driver based on the manufacturer of the printing device. Also if you go to add printers and let windows find the printer it will find it and set it up all on its own. Windows 8 and 10 and newer server editions will search out and find printers on the network via WSD and set them up on the workstation or server automatically. Set these individuals up to print using the correct print diver and using the IP address of the printing device. More than likely after doing this you will have a few users come to you and tell you that they can no longer print. The first thing I would suggest would be to web into the printing device and look in the network settings and look for what are called WSD settings and disable them. I work in the commercial printer and mfp industry and I believe the issue here is a service issue we run into regularly.
